Shiver

Shiver - Maggie Stiefvater, Jenna Lamia, David LeDoux I had this on my wish list because a YA librarian recommended it on the basis that I like SciFi/Fantasy books. Since then, I have heard conflicting reviews and am now very interested to see how I feel about this book.

Well, I gave up.

I hate doing that, but I just couldn't hang on anymore. Part of the problem was the readers. I'm sure they're both fine readers on their own, but I find I do not care for the breathy/whiny/featureless vocal stylings that tend to be so prevalent in this particular genre of audiobook (the supernatural teen romance genre). Is mono-tone really the best way to convey teen angst? Maybe, but it doesn't work for me.

The rest of the problem though...was me. I don't want to acknowledge the fact that I am actually too old for many of these YA stories. I guess I don't know any teenagers who are this dreary and dim. All the teens I know, even the depressed bi-polar My Life Is So Grim lot, are rather entertaining. They tend to be funny, passionate (about certain things which usually don't involve getting out of bed or cleaning up after themselves), and knowledgeable in a variety of areas. Thus, I have a hard time relating to these storybook characters who seem so flat, humorless, and stereotypical.

I finished about 3/4 of the book and had to just say "No More". I deleted it from my list immediately. I don't think I'll be trying it again nor will I be moving on to the second book. It is my secret hope that everyone in the story gets rabies and dies.
Ok, not really, but...maybe a little bit.
