Island Beneath the Sea

Island Beneath the Sea - Isabel Allende, Margaret Sayers Peden As a story, this book was decent. As an Allende novel, it was meh. Is there a term for "lifelong vignette"? If so, that's what this is. It's interesting enough. I don't know much about the history of Haiti or the early years of New Orleans to vouch for the historical accuracy of the novel, though I tend to trust Ms. Allende's research skills. It's just that this story didn't wrap me up like her others have. I didn't feel invested in the character's lives, though I felt I should have. I wasn't motivated to find out more about the slave uprisings in Haiti or France's attempt to keep control of the island or the effects of the Louisiana Purchase on New Orlean's culture of the time.
I'd say I liked it well enough, but it was forgettable and I don't think I'll read it again.
